Installing on Windows 10/11 (on Steam)

NOTE: Fantasy Grounds VTT (FGVTT) used to be called Fantasy Grounds Unity (FGU). Some screenshots were made prior to this renaming and may reflect the old FGU name. Please bear with us while we update the wiki to match current naming conventions and visual aesthetic changes.

Install the Software

  1. From within the Steam Store page, click in the Search box in the upper right and type Fantasy Grounds VTT

  2. Once located, click the Fantasy Grounds VTT box.

NOTE: Your INSTALL TO: path may be different than the one shown in the screenshot above. It will default to the location specified in the Steam Client.

  1. Navigate to your Steam Library and location Fantasy Grounds VTT Demo, then click Play.

If a license key was detected from an earlier purchase of Fantasy Grounds VTT, a window may pop up prompting you to write down or copy your license key.
We recommend recording this license key for later in the installation process.

  2. After installation is complete, the FGUpdateEngine will run to guide you through setting up file locations, username and password verification as well as license key entry.

  3. Choose a path where your data files will be stored. This will require the most storage space for modules, maps, extensions, etc. so make sure this location will have ample space.
Click the Check Directory button to make sure the installer has the proper permissions to create the directory.

  4. Type in your username and password, then click the Log In button. Once your login credentials are validated, you will see a “Login Successful” message. Click Continue to go to the License Key screen.
If you don’t yet have an account, you can click on Click Here To Create One Now.
Your Fantasy Grounds forum account is what you use to log in.

  1. Now link above the username box to create an account. Your Fantasy Grounds forum account is what you use to log in.

NOTE: Fantasy Grounds account usernames are case-sensitive. Be sure to enter your username into Fantasy Grounds exactly as it appears in the forums.
ie. DragonSlayer is not the same as dragonslayer

  1. If you have a license key, manually enter or paste it into the box and click Continue.
If you do not have a license key and wish to Demo the software, just click Continue without entering a key. If you think the key might have been entered incorrectly, you can check by clicking the Eye icon to de-obfuscate the license key.

  2. Once these steps are completed, click Finish, and the Updater should run automatically. If it does not, click Update to run the latest update. The Updater will install the latest version of Fantasy Grounds, including modules and any purchased products you have from Steam or from the Fantasy Grounds website.

In the example above, the Fantasy Grounds Updater is looking for previous purchases (in this case, 178 items), items that have been purchased or subscribed to in FG Forge (in this case, 8 items) and any FGVTT main program updates. This screen may look different depending on whether you have any prior purchases on your Fantasy Grounds account, FG Forge items, etc.

NOTE: Once Fantasy Grounds VTT has updated the FGUpdaterEngine program, it will restart and may look different. This is because FGVTT has updated it’s core theme since the original launcher was uploaded. This is normal.

  1. Once the updater has completed it’s process, click Launch Fantasy Grounds and accept the End-User License Agreement to proceed.

  2. You should now see the Fantasy Grounds VTT main screen:

Choosing a Location for your Data Directory
Fantasy Grounds Classic (FGC) users will want to pick a different path for Fantasy Grounds VTT (FGVTT). While FGVTT will be able to read and use FGC files, this does not work the other direction. Changes made in FGVTT may break these files for FGC. For this reason, we highly recommend keeping two separate paths and storing these separately from each other.
