How To Create a Tales of the Valiant Campaign

Creating A New TotV Campaign

Since Tales of the Valiant is a Dungeons & Dragons 5e compatible ruleset, you will need to create a D&D 5e campaign, then make sure Tales of the Valiant settings are loaded during the creation of the Campaign. Below, we will show you the steps to load Tales of the Valiant quickly and easily, and begin exploring right away!

First, make sure you have clicked Check For Updates in the Fantasy Grounds VTT main screen

NOTE: If you just purchased Tales of the Valiant, be sure to click Check For Updates from the Fantasy Grounds VTT main window to download and install your new purchase.

Once you are ready to create a new Tales of the Valiant campaign, complete the following steps:

Click the Create Campaign button from the main Fantasy Grounds VTT menu.
Click to select the Dungeons and Dragons (5E) ruleset in the Game Systems area.
Give your new Campaign a name by entering it in the NAME field.
In the Extensions area to the right, select Setting: Tales of the Valiant. This extensions will make sure that all settings necessary to use Tales of the Valiant are selected when the Campaign is loaded.
Click the START button to load your newly-created Campaign!

NOTE: You are also free to set other options, such as setting a password for your Campaign, changing the Server Type (we recommend Cloud) and choose whether the campaign is Public (shown on the Join Campaign screen) or Private. These are all optional settings.

Make Sure The TotV Settings Are Correct

If you have both the D&D 5e Legacy (2014) and Dungeons and Dragons 5e (2024) rulesets in your Fantasy Grounds account, you will be asked whether you wish to use the 2024 or Legacy rulesets. This is optional and can be changed in the Options menu at any time.

Selecting either Yes or No will override the Settings extension we loaded when creating the campaign (it may read 2024 or Legacy), so we’ll want to go into Options and make sure the ToV settings are set.

Here is how we make sure the ToV settings are selected:

Click on the Options icon in the Sidebar on the right under the TOOL heading.
Scroll down to the Game section and locate the Game: Rules Version setting.
Use the arrows on the left or right of the selection box to rotate through the options, stopping on ToV.

Loading the TotV Modules

Once you’ve done this, you can close the Options window and continue to load and explore Tales of the Valiant content.

Below, we’ll load the Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide and Monster Vault modules.

Click on the Modules button in the Sidebar under the LIBRARY heading.
In the Modules window, click the Activation button to locate and load the modules.
Optional: If you have a lot of D&D 5e modules that could also be loaded, you may want to use a keyword in the Search field to narrow to selection and make the Tales of the Valiant modules easier to find. In this instance, we know “valiant” will produce fewer results than, say “tales”.
Click the Load button on the module(s) you wish to load and explore.

NOTE: Since Tales of the Valiant is a 5e-compatible ruleset, you will likely want to load the other Dungeons & Dragons 5e core rulebooks such as the Player’s Handbook or Dungeon Masters Guide the same way you loaded the TotV modules above. This is, of course, optional, but should enhance the overall experience greatly.
