4K Monitor Displays A Quarter Of The Screen
Setup
This Troubleshooting article deals with the introduction of an secondary 4K monitor with a laptop. It does not delve into NVIDIA vs. AMD vs. Intel graphics, onboard graphics vs. bespoke graphics cards, types of 4K monitors, how said monitor is connected (USB/USB-C, Display Port, HDMI, etc.) or other factors we have not and cannot test within the scope of this article.
Before beginning the approaches below, make sure that all operating system and security updates have been applied, rebooting and repeating the update process as many times as is necessary to have everything installed and up-to-date. Also, be sure you have the latest manufacturer or system builder drivers installed for your chipset / motherboard / graphics card/GPU.
NOTE: Unity3D, the game engine used to create Fantasy Grounds VTT has had the issue(s) presented on this page since, according to our research, approximately 2015 or earlier.
The approaches to potential solutions offered below are not guaranteed to be effective in resolving the issue(s) as presented, but we wanted to share what information we have gathered to potentially help minimize time spent on search engines researching the issue.
Problem
When an secondary external 4K monitor is introduced to a laptop with its own display, the screen only shows about one-quarter of the usual full screen image. Sometimes, when disconnecting the 4K monitor, the original laptop display continues to display a quarter of the screen.
Potential Solutions
Approach 1 : Troubleshoot Compatibility Wizard
NOTE: This approach only applies to Windows 10/11.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the App location for Fantasy Grounds VTT. The default location is
C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\
unless this was changed at install.Find
FantasyGrounds.exe
and right-click on the file. This will present you with the simplified menu options (image 1).Click on Show more options at the bottom of the menu. Then, from the complete options menu (image 2), click Troubleshoot compatibility.
This will open the Get Help window, and should present the confirmation to run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Choose Yes from the options presented.
You will then be presented with a list of applications to troubleshoot. Select Fantasy Grounds VTT from the list.
NOTE: The applications listed will depend on what is installed on your computer and will differ slightly from the list in the example image below. Fantasy Grounds VTT, however, should be an option.
In the next section, you will be given options as to why you wish to run the troubleshooter. From this menu, select The program doesn’t display correctly.
In the next section, you can decide whether you with the troubleshooter to apply recommended compatibility settings for you. For this example, we will select Yes.
Once the troubleshooter runs, it will present another selection that you can answer depending on whether it solved your issue.
Approach 2: Disable Fullscreen Optimization
NOTE: This approach only applies to Windows 10/11.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the App location for Fantasy Grounds VTT. The default location is
C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds\
unless this was changed at install.Find
FantasyGrounds.exe
and right-click on the file. This will present you with the simplified menu options (image 1).From the menu options, select Properties.
Once in the FantasyGrounds.exe Properties window, click on the Compatibility tab, then put a checkmark in the Disable fullscreen optimizations box, then click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
Approach 3: Select A Slightly Lower Resolution
Some people have found success in setting a slightly lower resolution to be displayed on the 4K monitor. While this isn’t optimal and may not look as good as a higher resolution, it may solve the issue and allow you to use the full display.
Approach 4: Increase the Scale in Fantasy Grounds VTT
It may help increasing the scale of Fantasy Grounds VTT to 200% by going to Settings from the main menu, and moving the Application UI Scale slider to the right until it reads 200.
You can read more about UI Scaling in the following article:

Approach 5: If There Are two GPUs, use the other GPU
If your laptop has two GPUs, like for instance, you have an Intel motherboard and/or chipset which has graphics onboard, but the laptop also has an NVIDIA GPU that was added before shipping, there should be a way to switch between them to make sure that Fantasy Grounds VTT is always using the NVIDIA GPU instead of the onboard graphics.
Usually, there is an Intel app, AMD app, or NVIDIA app where this can be changed. It may also be in your operating system’s settings.
